Centre-Midfield 2: Eric Djemba-Djemba
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aefvaddanu0 With Sir Alex Ferguson preparing for the imminent retirement or nervous breakdown of captain Roy Keane in 2003, he splashed
£6.5 million on a relatively unknown Cameroonian defensive midfielder in the form of Eric Djemba-Djemba. The move was immediately pounced upon as questionable by pundits and the media, as Djemba-Djemba had little experience or reputation, and were probably annoyed that they would have to write the same surname twice in newspapers. Fortunately, in his eighteen months at the club, he did very little that journalists would feel the need to report on. Djemba-Djemba was in the unfortunate position that he was at the club during a time of transition, where he was unable to get an unbroken run in the first team as Ferguson tested others as potential understudies for Keane, and was also unfortunate that his stint saw United take a break from winning the league championship. In big matches he had a tendency to go missing, lacking the same bite and influence as the Irishman, so it was decided that he would not be up for the challenge as he left for Aston Villa. He will mostly be remembered for his great goal against Leeds in the League Cup, and the expense that parents had to pay for the few fans that sought his name on the back of their replica shirts.
