Centre-Back 2: William Prunier
When one types into your preferred Internet search engine "Worst ever United signing", William Prunier is one of the most prominent results that would appear. Whilst I have decided to add him to this team of misfits due to the strength of anti-Prunier feeling among United fans, it is fair to say that he wasn't really given much of a chance by the fans. Signed on trial for the 1995/96 season, he was forced into the first team due to a defensive injury crisis. Bruce, Pallister and May were all out of action, and Prunier was drafted like a naive teenager for front line warfare, and unsurprisingly, the Frenchman went missing in action. Though his first match against QPR was a generally good performance for the player, it is following fixture versus Tottenham that really demonstrated his unsuitability for the job he had been selected for. With the entire preferred back-line injured, including Schmeichel in goal, a makeshift and inexperienced defence were cut to ribbons by Spurs, with the final result of 4-1. Despite the injuries and other players around him not exactly playing at their peak, Prunier was chiefly singled out as a target for abuse, and despite being offered a trial extension by Sir Alex, he wisely decided to close this brief chapter of his career and decided to attempt a revival of his career at FC Copenhagen. A player that is lambasted and considered one of the worst in United history for a single performance, it is certainly unlucky for Prunier that he joined the club when he did, or it could have been a completely different story.
