Newcastle: 10 Best Foreign Signings In The Premier League Era

5. Tim Krul

As the natural long-term successor to Shay Given's throne the Holland international has firmly established himself as Newcastle's number one in the past three seasons and is one of the longest serving players at St James' having arrived from Eredivisie minnows Ado Den Haag almost nine years ago. As a shot-stopper there aren't many better than the 6ft 4in Dutchman with the debts owed to him continuing to pile up season after season. It wasn't until 2006 that a then 18-year-old Krul broke into the first-team and made his debut in a UEFA Cup match match away to Palermo, producing a string of stunning saves on the way to keeping a clean sheet as Glenn Roeder's men left Sicily with a 1-0 victory. It mirrored the victory at Tottenham eight years later, by the same scoreline no less, at White Hart Lane when he made a total of 14 saves - the most stops ever made by a Premier League keeper - earning him the Player of the Month award for November and widespread praise from the critics, fans and his peers. "This is the highlight of my career," he told the Mirror after the game.
