Newcastle: 6 Most Memorable Moments Against Leicester City

4. Shearer Versus Neil Lennon - 1998

For many non-Newcastle fans, this controversial game is best remembered as proof of the worst element of Alan Shearer's playing style: his tendency to be aggressive. That always had positives in his play, and made him fearless when faced his the yapping of "hardmen" opponents like Roy Keane who liked to have a pop, but it also threatened to get the England captain in trouble more than once, despite his "Mary Poppins" image. According to the harsher allegations Shearer took exception to a strong challenge by Lennon, and kicked out in frustration, connecting with the Leicester man's face and leaving him crumpled on the floor. The linesman and referee awarded a throw-in to Newcastle and Martin O'Neill exploded at the linesman for missing the incident, which then saw Shearer hauled in front of an FA commission. Ultimately, his squeaky-clean image saved him as football legends, including Glenn Hoddle, Gary Lineker, Gordon Taylor and Lennon himself spoke on his behalf. Lennon didn't dismiss the incident, but said he thought Shearer should have been punished at the time rather than having to stand in a tribunal. Leicester fans meanwhile still haven't forgiven or forgotten quite so easily.
