Newcastle Fans’ 11 Most Hated Players Of The Modern Era

11. Marcelino

There's a good chance that Spanish international Marcelino wasn't the worst defender to play for Newcastle. But there's also absolutely no way to prove it either way, because he simply never turned up after a then-big money move from Mallorca (inspired, we can only hope, by his clash with Dennis Wise). In a ridiculously disappointing four year spell with United, Marcelino went from misfit to outright figure of hatred thanks to an injury record that looked suspicious at best and wilfully false at worst. Unthinkably, this was the same player who had been hailed as one of the best in Europe by Ruud Gullit, but clearly when he arrived at Newcastle he simply decided that English football wasn't for him. In all the player cost the club £4m in wages, but it was his finger that caused the most hatred among fans. When players like Terry Butcher could play with their heads falling off, the fact that a poorly finger kept Marcelino out for two months was simply too much to take.
