Newcastle Midfielder On Brink Of Exit - But Only If Fee Is Agreed

Abeid's Tyneside exit is drawing closer.

Panathinaikos are looking to take Mehdi Abeid back to Greece this summer - but they are yet to meet Newcastle United's asking price, according to reports. The Chronicle claim the Greek outfit, who Abeid spent a season on loan at back in 2013-14, are hoping to acquire Abeid's services on a permanent basis, but they are yet to meet the Magpies' £2 million asking price. Abeid found himself on the Magpies€™ bench for the 1-0 pre-season friendly loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach earlier this month, but he did not come on - and now it looks like he will leave Tyneside, with Bundesliga 2 side Fortuna Düsseldorf also reportedly interested in his signature.

Last month, France Football claimed the Algeria international was in €œadvanced talks€ with German side Fortuna and it now looks likely he will move on to pastures new. And, speaking to the Rheinische Post earlier this month, Fortuna coach Kramer confirmed his club€™s interest in Abeid. He said:
€œThis is a player (Abeid) you have to always watch. Of course, he€™s interesting €“ but much more. It is not currently available. €œIn any case, he graduated to date no medical check with us.€
The midfielder impressed during his time at Panathinaikos, scoring 10 goals in 38 appearances and helping them claim the Greek Cup in 2013-14, and the Greek club want to add greater strength to their squad for this season. Last season, Abeid played 16 times for the Magpies €“ including on 13 occasions in the Premier League €“ but Steve McClaren€™s arrival seems to have put an end to his Newcastle United career.
