Newcastle: Ranking All Number 9’s From Premier League Era
2. Les Ferdinand
A difficult one this as there are two who could be deemed second only to Shearer as great Newcastle number nines, but Ive gone with Sir Les on the basis that his significant contribution took Newcastle agonisingly close to the Premier League title in the 1995/96 season. Ferdinand was an immensely popular figure on Tyneside and his departure was greeted with as much confusion as it was disappointment - and supporters have since pondered the successes the club might have achieved if they had kept the then unstoppable Shearer/Ferdinand tandem together. Les was the prototype number 9 for Newcastle - a target man who can find the net and dominate in the air. He starred for the Toon Army in his prime and will always be a crowd and club favourite. Of the Premier League era and all-time he can be considered a Newcastle great.
