Newcastle: Ranking All Number 9’s From Premier League Era

2. Les Ferdinand

A difficult one this as there are two who could be deemed second only to Shearer as great Newcastle number nines, but I€™ve gone with Sir Les on the basis that his significant contribution took Newcastle agonisingly close to the Premier League title in the 1995/96 season. Ferdinand was an immensely popular figure on Tyneside and his departure was greeted with as much confusion as it was disappointment - and supporters have since pondered the successes the club might have achieved if they had kept the then unstoppable Shearer/Ferdinand tandem together. Les was the prototype number 9 for Newcastle - a target man who can find the net and dominate in the air. He starred for the Toon Army in his prime and will always be a crowd and club favourite. Of the Premier League era and all-time he can be considered a Newcastle great.
