Newcastle Transfers: 10 French Bargains Pardew Should Target In January
2. Dimitar Berbatov
Club: Monaco Though he's only scored 8 goals since joining Monaco, the former Man Utd player's time in France has not been an unmitigated disaster. He's only started 20 games after all, and was only initially designed to be back-up for the injured Falcao, so he did a job. And while he is inevitably always considered a luxury player, he's the kind of hold-up player who would work extremely well with a more mobile front line of Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez and Yoan Gouffran (the untouchable). With Siem De Jong out and probably unlikely to feature too much when he's declared fit over fears of a relapse, Berbatov would be perfect to fill in to that sort of number 10 role. Likelihood Slim, even though he's claimed before to being a Newcastle fan. He's just too old, and he looks too much like a Mark Viduka clone: yes, he is hugely talented, but his work-rate isn't exactly going to compare favourably to the Energiser bunny-like efforts of Yoan Gouffran. And we all know how Pardew feels about flair players who have to be carried for some of the game.
