Newcastle Transfers: 10 Greatest Modern Foreign Imports

6. Tim Krul

Krul For many Newcastle fans, the loss of Shay Given was a bitter pill to swallow: he'd been an influential player both on and off the pitch for many years, and with only Steve Harper really available to fill the void, most Newcastle fans were dreading the worst. That was soon realised at the end of the 08/09 season, as just four months after Given's departure, Newcastle were relegated to the second tier of English football. Since then, most fans have never looked back: Tim Krul, who has been at the club since 2006, rose to the number one spot, replacing the ageing Steve Harper thanks to some incredible performances and he's gone from strength to strength. His credibility rose even further after heroic displays over the course of the 11/12 season which saw Newcastle narrowly miss out on fourth spot and qualify for the Europa League. At just the tender age of 24 (still relativity young for a Goalkeeper), he is no doubt a future Dutch number 1. Signed for a mere ‚220,000, he is undoubtedly one of Newcastle's best value foreign imports in the club's history.
