Now that Newcastle have finally started targeting players with proven quality, they could do far worse than Patrick Herrmann.

Herrmann would inject some much-needed pace into Steve McClaren’s side, but his ability to play up front and his goalscoring record from the wing - 11 last season - will be the biggest appeal to the Newcastle head coach.

McClaren has made no secret of his intentions to play a more attacking, possession-based style of football next season and, with Herrmann’s current team Borussia Monchengladbach operating in a similar style, he could fit right in.

Herrmann has represented Germany at every level of youth football and made his senior debut for Germany in June, assisting Mario Gotze’s opener in a 2-1 friendly defeat to USA.

It’s unlikely the winger would move away from the Bundesliga with the Euros at the end of the season. But after playing in Monchengladbach’s 1-0 pre season friendly win over Newcastle at St James' Park, the German international may have been impressed with the stadium and the opportunity to play in the Premier League could tempt the forward.
