Newcastle Transfers: 5 Signings Alan Pardew Needs To Make To Avoid Disaster

5. Joleon Lescott

Considering how porous Newcastle United's defence was last season, and taking into account the fact they have shipped four this season already, a new centre-back wouldn't go amiss at St James' Park this summer. Last season, the Magpies were hammered 6-0 by Liverpool, 7-3 by Arsenal and, perhaps worst of all, 3-0 by Sunderland. Reinforcements at the back then might be in order, and one option is Manchester City's Joloen Lescott. The England international is facing an uncertain future at the Etihad at present and is believed to be holding off from signing a new contract until he is promised more game time in Manchester. And if he doesn't get that guarantee, he could end up in the North East. Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic were the two favoured centre-backs last season but given the Citizen's defensive crisis that forced new boss Manuel Pellegrini to play midfielder Javi Garcia as a centre-half at the weekend, Lescott has been called into action. However, it remains to be seen if he retains his place when Kompany returns, and if he will commit himself to City or move elsewhere.
