Newcastle Transfers: 7 Centre-Backs Pardew Must Consider Signing

6. Curtis Davies

Current Club: Hull City Newcastle have been linked with the English defender since he was a young prospect at Luton and then West Brom. Though his ability has never quite matched up to his potential, Davies remains a very good defender, whose value comes in his Premier League experience, but more importantly in his defensive stats from last season. He might be 29 and a more short-term option than some of the other options on this list, but his record of 470 defensive actions last year left him second only to Liverpool's Skrtel. And though he probably had more to do thanks to his team's frailty, making 104 interceptions is still hugely impressive (putting him third in the list of interceptors). The Concerns Steve Bruce is unlikely to do his boyhood team any favours given how valuable Davies was to his side's form last season, and though they only finished in 16th, it could have been considerably worse without him. That would likely mean an extortionate offer would be needed - which is unlikely to happen for a 29 year old - and Davies himself would have to be convinced to give up on a season (or at least part of one) playing in the Europa League.
