Newcastle Tried To SELL Jack Colback To West Ham For £5 Million

After incurring the wrath of Sunderland's scorned supporters following his controversial defection to Tyneside it seems Jack Colback might have to brace himself for an even bigger backlash from Newcastle fans. Reports in the Mirror this morning claim that free agent Colback attempted to wriggle out of a move to St James' Park despite signing an agreement with the Club and engineer a move to West Ham with the transfer held up for two weeks as a result. Newcastle rightly refused to allow the 24-year-old to stage what would have been a dramatic U-turn after his representatives indicated the player had changed his mind overnight and was anxious for a move to Upton Park instead. Mike Ashley even tried to SELL him for £5 million only for the Hammers to decline what would have been one of the strangest transfer deals of the summer. It certainly has the potential to be damaging revelation if true, although it's understood the Killingworth-born midfielder's desire to backtrack on his agreement with the Magpies stemmed from concerns regarding the negative reaction he would receive from Sunderland after leaving the Stadium of Light on bad terms. Concerns that would prove legitimate given the terse statement released by his former employers and the brutal comments directed towards him on social media. The report also indicates that Colback will pick up a handsome £50,000-a-week wage at Newcastle and we can rest assured that his sudden change of heart wasn't financially motivated - he was offered the same terms by West Ham - and came about purely out of fear.
