Newcastle United 0-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach - Player Ratings

6. Vurnon Anita - 5.5 (Replaced By Siem De Jong After 75 Minutes)

In the first-half Anita showed glimpses of how he may be utilised more proficiently by Steve McClaren than he ever was by Alan Pardew or John Carver, but in all honesty this was another average performance from the defensive-midfielder. Completely outplayed in the heart of midfield by the effortless Granit Xhaka, Anita dropped so deep in the second-half to receive the ball that he practically became a third (rather diminutive) centre-back. McClaren seems to like playing him because Anita is tidy on the ball and does move it from side to side well, but he needs to offer more.

Siem de Jong - 6.5

The Dutchman looked lively off the bench during the short time he was on the field for, adding a bit of urgency to the Magpies in attack. Extremely unselfish in the 86th minute, De Jong - who was clean through on goal - squared the ball to Aleksandar Mitrovic, and the Serbian rattled an effort off the post when it would have been easier to score.
