There may have been a distinct lack of silverware at Newcastle United over the past four decades or so, but therell be a different kind of silver on display when the Magpies take to the field this weekend. The Toons trip to Liverpool for their final game of the current campaign on Sunday will see Alan Pardews men don their all-new silver away kit for the very first time. (On sale now from the club shop) Fabricio Coloccini, Cheick Tiote and Co will be following in some very famous footsteps when they emerge from the tunnel at Anfield, with the colour used by the St. James Park outfit as far back as the early 1980s. Newcastles traveling fans have enjoyed some memorable silver-lined moments from some big names at home and abroad, and here WhatCulture.com looks at seven of them.
7. Peter Beardsley Takes Matters Into His Own Hands - Huddersfield Town vs NUFC (Division Two, May 1984)
After a five-year absence from Englands top-flight, Newcastle United were on the brink of promotion in May 1984, and needed just a point from a Bank Holiday trip to Huddersfield Town to send them up. Approximately 12,000 Geordies made the trip to West Yorkshire to see if Arthur Coxs side could finish the job after theyd stumbled at Cambridge United a week earlier. Leeds Road was packed to the rafters, but the home side had failed to read the script, and scored twice in four minutes thanks to a Graham Cooper effort from close range and a Steve Carney own-goal. But the Toon and their traveling hordes werent to be denied, and they were level before half-time when Peter Beardsley took matters into his own hands. In the absence of Kevin Keegan for the one and only time that season, the popular Geordie came to life with a stunning drive from 20-yards before setting up David Mills to equalise moments later. With the required point in the bag, United were back in the big time, and their ecstatic away fans swamped the players on the final whistlesilver shirts and all.
