Newcastle United Greatest Ever Premier League XI

1. ST - Alan Shearer

Mr Newcastle, how could he be left out? The record goal-scorer was worth every penny of the then jaw-dropping £15m fee Newcastle paid to Blackburn Rovers, scuppering Man Utd's attempts to buy him to bring the Geordie home. After starting his career with the famous Wallsend boys club, he burst onto the scene at Southampton before scoring a ridiculous 112 goals in 138 at Rovers and that was enough to capture Kevin Keegan's imagination. After that glorious return home the rest was history: despite some serious injuries that might have ruined other player's careers Shearer played in ten seasons for his home-town club, scoring every type of goal possible. He was the archetype of the "old fashioned centre-forward", an ox-strong natural finisher who was imperious in the air and deadly on the ground. In truth, for a lot of the time he was at Newcastle, Shearer was too good for the rest of the team, and even as his legs gave in to age and injury he still scored 10 league goals in his final season. His place in legend is assured. Which other Newcastle players deserve to be considered in this list of the greatest Premier League stars? Share your own picks below in the comments thread.
