After starting his career with the famous Wallsend boys club, he burst onto the scene at Southampton before scoring a ridiculous 112 goals in 138 at Rovers and that was enough to capture Kevin Keegan's imagination. After that glorious return home the rest was history: despite some serious injuries that might have ruined other player's careers Shearer played in ten seasons for his home-town club, scoring every type of goal possible. He was the archetype of the "old fashioned centre-forward", an ox-strong natural finisher who was imperious in the air and deadly on the ground.
