To the casual observer the final Premier League table suggest a relatively stress free campaign for Newcastle after we finished up in 10th position and achieved the pre-season objective set by Mike Ashley. But for every Toon supporter the second half of the season was an unmitigated failure as we plummeted from the fringes of the top-four and became embroiled in a mini-league battle with Southampton, Stoke and, surprising to most, Crystal Palace for the right to stay in the top-half. Thus it makes selecting a Player of the Season that bit tougher as very few displayed enough consistency in 2014 to warrant inclusion in the reckoning for this most illustrious of awards. Many will throw forward the names of Loic Remy and Mathieu Debuchy as the only two players to emerge with any shred of credibility from this most unsettling of seasons. Debuchy is unquestionably up there but Remy, we feel, would be a contentious selection after it was suggested his focus from January was to guard against injury with the World Cup looming large on the horizon for our 14-goal leading top scorer (10 goals in 17 games up until January 1st and just four in 10 after that). Mike Williamson, who started the season as fourth choice centre back, has been a pillar of stability at the back and started 33 Premier League games in succession since coming off the bench against Everton at the end of September. Moussa Sissoko, our most productive creator this term (77 chance madewith six assists) and Yoan Gouffran are also deserved of mentions. Cheick Tiote, however, has emerged as a leader in the heart of the Magpies midfield (completing 1824 from 2094 passes and garnering a 65% tackle success rate) before and since Yohan Cabaye left and would be our pick for Player of the Season.
