Newcastle vs Man Utd: 5 Classic Toon Moments No Geordie Will Ever Forget

2. Shearer Vs Keane

Not exactly one for the football purists, but definitely a moment that will have gone down in the collective memory of the St James Park crowd, especially in the wake of Roy Keane's later association with Sunderland - this skirmish between the two Premier League icons was for some the crowning moment of Newcastle's impressive 2001 victory over the Champions. Unable to overtake the Magpies lead, Man United came back to level the scores twice, at 1-1 and 3-3 before Alan Shearer scored a fourth goal to turn St James into a writhing mass of excitement, Wes Brown deflecting his fierce shot over the prone goalkeeper. And then, as the game closed out, and Alan Shearer took to his usual antics of shielding the ball to waste some time deep into the opponent's half, with the ball eventually going out for a throw-in. Then, for some reason that hasn't been officially unveiled - there are rumours of what Shearer might have said to Keane under his breath - Roy Keane lost his temper, first throwing the ball off Shearer's back (who responded by telling on him), and then losing it completely when the referee came to yellow card him. A punch was thrown, which almost connected with Shearer's chin, and Keane was restrained by fellow players, before receiving a red card for his troubles, and then losing it for a second time and going for Shearer again. To the continued delight of Newcastle fans, Shearer simply stood his ground with a look of icey determination on his face as Keane was calmed down and marched off the pitch. A terribly macho victory it might have been, but an enduring moment all the same. http://youtu.be/lyg2wofOp3E
