Newcastle vs Sunderland: 5 Greatest Ever Premier League Tyne & Wear Derbies

1. Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland October 31st 2010

Kevin Nolan Halloween is a time for scaring and this was certainly a nightmare for Sunderland fans. Newcastle had returned to the Premier League just months earlier and they were up for the derby. The day was a disaster from the outset for Sunderland. Newcastle were the better side throughout and after 26 minutes they were ahead, a corner was flicked on and Nolan with his back to goal played it over his head and over Mignolet in to the Sunderland goal. Nolan got his and Newcastle€™s second just eight minutes later when Carroll€™s mishit scissor kick fell in to his path and he only had to tap in. Sunderland were looking to get to half time at 2-0 but when Jonas drove in to the area, Onuoha dived in unnecessarily giving away a penalty. Shola Ameobi stepped up and slotted the penalty low in to the corner. After half time, to the delight of the home fans former Newcastle man Titus Bramble was red carded for hacking down Andy Carroll and things didn€™t get much better. A looping cross was headed on to the bar by Carroll and Ameobi was first there to fire home. Nolan finally wrapped up his hattrick when he flicked on Ameobi€™s header from a corner to the delight of the Newcastle crowd. Bent grabbed a late consolation from a corner but the damage was done and it ended 5-1. After a year away from the Premier League Newcastle had thumped their local rivals and they revelled in the success. A real derby thumping, something Newcastle will be looking to repeat on Sunday and something Sunderland are still looking to avenge. Did we miss your favourite Tyne & Wear derby?
