Newcastle vs Sunderland: 5 Greatest Ever Premier League Tyne & Wear Derbies

2. Sunderland 1-4 Newcastle 17th April 2006

Rock bottom Sunderland hosted Newcastle, hoping to dent their rivals European push. Sunderland were already doomed but they could still go down with smiles on their faces with victory over their local rivals. Sunderland didn€™t play like a team destined for the drop in the first half and had the better of the play, Newcastle hardly getting going. Sunderland took a deserved lead in to half time after right back Justin Hoyte slotted in from close range after good build up. Newcastle went in at half time despondent and their performance didn€™t give much to be optimistic about. However the second half was a different story, Michael Chopra had barely been on the pitch fifteen seconds when a long ball was left by Caldwell and all he had to do was tap in for 1-1 with an hour gone. One of the key events came just a minute later when Hoyte turned villain when his clumsy tackle brought down N€™Zogbia in the penalty area, Shearer slammed the resultant penalty home. This was his 206th goal for Newcastle and his last. He went off injured shortly afterwards and never played for his beloved club again, fitting his last goal came against their fiercest rivals. Five minutes later a direct run from N€™Zogbia left the Sunderland defence in sixes and sevens and he slotted home from twelve yards. There was still time for more as Newcastle made it 4-1, more bad defending allowing usually absent Albert Luque to keep his composure and finish. This was a bad day for Sunderland and a great one for Newcastle. Not just the result but the capitulation was a source of much taunting by their fans and it is still a result they sing about to this day.
