NFL: 10 Things We Learned From Preseason Week 1

1. Mariota And Winston Need Time

All eyes were firmly on Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota in their debuts for Tampa Bay and Tennessee respectively, and while neither shone too brightly, it's far too early to write either of them off for the 2015 season. Starting with Number 1 pick Winston, the former-Florida State man picked out Vincent Jackson with a 40yd pass, though he could only record 9 completions out of 19 for 131yds, plus an interception and two mishandled snaps. He looked erratic at times, but the experience of stomping onto an NFL field for the first time in a Bucs uniform will have helped him immeasurably. Expect to see a more settled Winston in Week 2 for the first time on his new home turf against the Bengals. With Mariota it's a fairly similar story. His first two possessions ended in an interception, then a costly fumble, though he went on to inspire a marching TD drive later in the game with some neat plays. He finished up with a respectable 7 out of 8 for 94yds, now it's up to the young QB to ensure the 'one interception, one fumble, one sack' line doesn't appear again. Fans of both franchises must learn to be patient with their new prized assets. Both have tasted the NFL now, and can be expected to produce less nervy displays next week to put their fans at ease.
