NUFC Striker Adam Campbell Has Trial At West Brom
Is the young Newcastle United forward on his way to the Midlands?
Newcastle United youngster Adam Campbell's contract expires at the end of the season and it appears as if he is already preparing for life away from Tyneside after he lined up for West Bromwich Albion Under-21s in a friendly match. Campbell, who scored an impressive four goals in five appearances while on loan at Gateshead earlier this campaign, played a trial match for the Baggies as he ran out for their 3-0 victory over Arsenal U-21s. The 20-year-old provided an assist for strike partner Adil Nabi and seemed to play a decent role for West Brom as he stayed on the field for 60 minutes - heightening speculation that he could make a permanent move to the Midlands. When Campbell first broke into the Newcastle first-team as a 17-year-old against Atromitos in the Europa League back in August 2012, big things were expected of the North Shields-born forward but it has never quite worked out for him. Following five appearances during his first season, Campbell was then loaned out to Carlisle United, St Mirren, Fleetwood Town, Hartlepool United and latterly Gateshead - and he has only really just started to discover some goal-scoring form. Six goals in 29 appearances throughout his career is an average return and is unlikely to convince the St James' Park hierarchy to offer him a new deal. To be fair on Campbell his development was arguably hindered by Newcastle themselves as they probably threw him in too quickly and expected far too much of a striker who scored goals for fun as a youngster - but the club will be taking a big risk offering the 20-year-old a new contract considering he has yet to set the world alight.
