Predicting England's 23-Man World Cup Squad

Midfield

With Liverpool enjoying such a fantastic campaign this season, I'd be tempted to pick as many Reds players as possible - in fact, I think three members of Brendan Rodgers' side will make the England midfield. Steven Gerrard is expected to make the finals having captained his club with such aplomb this term, while colleagues Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling should also get the nod. Henderson has struck four times for Liverpool this season while winger Sterling is a real handful, with his nine goals this season helping him establish himself as a regular under Rodgers. At 19, Sterling is a tremendously exciting young talent, as are Arsenal duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere, Southampton's Adam Lallana and Everton's Ross Barkley. I expect all four to form a youthful-looking England midfield this summer. But you also need experience. A bit of glue to hold everything together. In comes Frank Lampard and James Milner, two names you might not expect to see on Hodgson's team-sheet yet both pull the strings for their respective clubs, Chelsea and Manchester City, and work tirelessly for the cause. Missing Out? Manchester United have endured a dreadful season and Hodgson has warned some of their flops could miss out on the World Cup as a consequence. With that in mind, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley need not pack their bags for Brazil this summer. Also tipped to miss out are Gareth Barry, Stewart Downing, Jonjo Shelvey, Tom Huddlestone and Aaron Lennon, while Andros Townsend definitely won't travel due to an ankle injury.
