Premier League: 10 Important Deadline Day Transfers

10. Clint Dempsey - Fulham to Tottenham

After refusing to play for Fulham a move away from Craven Cottage was inevitable for the American. Dempsey was wanted by Liverpool and Aston Villa but told the latter that he wasn't interested because he wanted to move further north. However, Liverpool couldn't agree personal terms or a transfer fee for the forward and he accepted an offer from Spurs. Liverpool fans have been left questioning their club's decision to dismiss Fulham's demands when it was announced that Tottenham had signed their target on a three-year contract. After humiliating Robert Green at the 2010 World Cup with 'that' goal, Dempsey's Fulham career took off as he brought goals and structure into his club performances. His exploits up front and as a link-up player made him a firm favourite in London but that all changed in August. Rumours of a move to Liverpool sparked his interest and, either under advice from his agent or out of disrespect to Fulham, he decided not to play for them any more. Manager Martin Jol had no option but to let him go once he had announced his intentions.
