Premier League: 10 Managers Who Should Never Have Been Sacked
7. Chris Hughton - Newcastle Following Newcastle's relegation to the Championship in 2009, owner Mike Ashley decided to put the club up for sale. He appointed Chris Hughton as caretaker manager as he felt it would be unwise to appoint a permanent manager with the club up for sale. However, after a fantastic start to the season, Hughton was named as manager on a permanent basis. The good results continued and Hughton led Newcastle to promotion on the first time of asking, by winning the Championship. Newcastle lost just four games and went the entire season unbeaten at home. Newcastle secured a number of key signings in the Summer transfer window including that of Cheick Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa. They had a number of fantastic results at the start of the season including a 6-0 win at home to Aston Villa, a 1-0 win away to Arsenal and a memorable 5-1 victory against bitter rivals Sunderland. Everyone involved with the club was delighted with the way things were going. Everyone except the owners, that is. Following a 3-1 defeat to West Brom in December 2010, Hughton was sacked with the club in a solid 11th place in the table. The decision enraged Newcastle fans who couldn't believe the man who had done nothing but good things for the club had lost his job. The fans organised a protest, both to show their anger towards Mike Ashley and to thank Chris Hughton for everything he had done for the club. Rarely has a managerial sacking ever been met with such fury and animosity by a set of fans.
