Premier League 2019/20: 8 Big Takeaways From Gameweek Two
6. The Weird Stuff
With so much football played over the course of a season, there are always moments of madness and simply bizarre incidents. This week, one of the craziest situations involved Liverpool’s goalkeeper.
Last week against Norwich, the Reds’ number one Alisson Becker injured himself and is now out for several weeks, paving the way for the team’s newest addition, former West Ham goalkeeper Adrian, to take his place. The Spaniard’s penalty saving heroics that earned Liverpool the Super Cup in mid-week, however, were soon forgotten.
After a pitch invasion, a Liverpool fan slipped into the goalkeeper, injuring his foot, meaning he was a doubt for the game against Southampton. Though he eventually battled through the injury to play, he gifted ex-Red Danny Ings a goal with a horrendous pass attempt, and allowed Southampton a way back into the game. Pretty much the dictionary definition of hero to zero.
The other bizarre incident over the weekend revolved around the refereeing team for the Leicester vs. Chelsea game on Sunday afternoon. The planned referee for the game, Graham Scott, was stuck in traffic on the M4 before the game, meaning fourth official Oliver Langford took charge of the game for his Premier League refereeing debut.
