Premier League: 5 Biggest Internal Bust Ups & Their Consequences

3. Alan Shearer & Joey Barton

In April 2009, with Newcastle United in the bottom three of the Premier League with just eight games to go, Geordie legend Alan Shearer stepped into the breach in an attempt to steer his beloved club away from the dreaded drop zone. In one of his eight games at the helm, his side faced Liverpool at Anfield, and Joey Barton was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Xabi Alonso. With Newcastle down to 10 men, the Magpies lost the game 3-0 and were eventually relegated from the Premier League. The Consequence Joey Barton was suspended indefinitely by Shearer for his red card, after the pair reportedly had a furious row in the dressing room after full time. Barton reportedly called Shearer "a pr*ck" and "a cr*p manager with cr*p tactics", whilst Shearer ordered Barton to stay away from the club and effectively ended their working relationship. Had Shearer remained as Magpies manager, Barton would likely have been sold, but as it happened, Shearer walked away from the job, Chris Hughton was reinstated as Newcastle's caretaker manager, and Barton remained on Tyneside for another two years.
