1. What Will It Mean If Hull FC Officially Change Their Name To The Hull Tigers?
It seems all too common place in this day and age for owners of football clubs to make ridiculous demands and make decisions that don't seem to benefit the club as a whole. My section on Cardiff City and Vincent Tan attempted to highlight that fact. But one thing that does seem to be worrying people is the debate about whether Hull City FC should change their name to the Hull City Tigers. Fans are incensed by the idea, but should they be? Assem Allam, the current owner of Hull City FC, declared his intention to change the name of the Yorkshire club in September and stated that he would change the name by the next season. In terms of money, it would mean the club would become more attractive to fans in foreign countries, especially in Asia. More money, of course, means more to spend in transfer windows and more to use on the clubs facilities. With this in mind, what's in a name? Surely it won't effect a club that much. On the other hand, they have been Hull City FC for over 100 years. History is the main reason for the fans opposition to the idea, with many fans supporting the club since childhood and having watched this team through the highs and lows. By changing the name, many supporters will feel you are taking something away from the fans and granting it to the owner (who is only ever a temporary carer for the club). The main argument I have though, is brought together due to my love of American Football. In the American sport, teams are known more for their nicknames than where they are from. There are not many people outside of the sport who know that the Colts are from Indianapolis and the Steelers are from Pittsburgh. The reason that teams are so connected with their nicknames, however, is because at any time an owner can, for financial reasons, move a team to another part of the country. The Los Angeles Rams moved to St. Louis, but are still the Rams, The LA Raiders moved to Oakland but are still the Raiders. If foreign owners are choosing to change team names to reflect what they do in America, then it would smart to believe that they wish to do this so they can re-locate these teams when they see fit. The Hull City Tigers could be the Cornwall Tigers by 2016. What do you think? Have I missed out any glaring questions? Let me know and please comment below.
