Premier League: 8 Most Over Hyped Players Of This Season

9. Christian Benteke

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I wonder how much Benteke regrets signing that contract extension in the summer? If rumours are to be believed he was flirting with quite a few high profile clubs (including Chelsea, Arsenal and AC Milan) after handing in a transfer request but instead signed a new contract mid July that would see him at the club until 2017. He was a revelation at Villa in the 2012/2013 season. Single handedly keeping them up with 19 goals scored in the Premier League alone. His bullish style, pace and relatively young age were the assets that got other potential suitors looking and if he could get goals in a poor Villa team then imagine what he could get in a team with significant quality. So much was expected of him this year. This season, however, provides a very different story. He started in his typical exciting fashion with 2 goals against Arsenal (one headed and one penalty) and 1 against Chelsea. He scored 2 more goals in all competitions but was then injured against Norwich and didn't return for another 3 games. Since then however he has only scored 3 goals in 16 games. A poor return for a player of his calibre. His drop in form could be due to a few niggling injuries he has suffered this year, but more likely is the Aston Villa sized squad he needs to carry through the season. Goals do seem to have to come through the Belgian or they don't come at all, putting added pressure on the youngster to perform every game. Frustration is starting to set in, and it would be worth seeing how long he stays at Villa Park despite his rather new contract.
