Fee: £22.7 million, January 2011. You dont get quality in the January transfer window, is a phrase you could well hear quite often at this time of year, but, if Luis Suarez isnt quality, I dont know what is. Signed for £22.7 million from Ajax in 2011, the Uruguayan's transfer was overshadowed somewhat by the larger (and frankly preposterous) fee paid for England striker Andy Carroll, but history has already confirmed which was the better deal, by about a hundred thousand country miles. There is always a gamble when buying strikers who have good scoring record in Eredivise because sometimes they are quite hit or miss in the Premier League - for every Ruud Van Nistelrooy there is a Mateja Kezman - but there is no doubt that Suarez is in the formers category. £22.7 million for a player who would fetch quadruple that now is great January business, proving it can be done. Suarez has improved in every season hes been at Liverpool: his first full season ended with 11 goals, he scored 23 in his second full season, and he already has 22 goals in just 17 games so far this season. If he continues to score at this rate he will break Alan Shearer and Andy Coles Premier League record of 34 goals in a season. There is no doubt that he comes with some baggage but his performances since signing have been scintillating, and there can be little doubt that he is currently the best player in the Premier League.
