You can discount the ageing legs of Croatian grafter Olic, but the other six names would all add something to Stoke. Defenders Lescott and Mancienne could be tempted to join Hughes after frustrating campaigns with their current clubs.

A move is a definite necessity if Lescott harbours any ambitions of regaining his place in the England squad for the World Cup. Former Chelsea man Mancienne moved to the continent in the hope of pressing his own claims, but they never materialized. Manchester United pair Powell and Zaha meanwhile would get a fair crack at the Premier League in advanced positions in behind the Potters striker. That could be either be ex-Red Devil Diouf or de Jong as Kenwyne Jones has provided little competition for Peter Crouch under Hughes.
