It was a clash between two of the greatest and grandest sides in club world football - Real Madrid, nine time winners of this competition and Manchester United, England's most successful team. We expected a frenetic and attacking display from Real Madrid, who have a galaxy of stars in their ranks, no least in Cristiano Ronaldo, and that's exactly what we got, as the hosts peppered United with wave after wave of attacks with the impressive Angel Di Maria frequently at the centre of whatever attacking intent Real mustered. But United held firm and even managed to get themselves a crucial away goal to take home to Old Trafford for the return leg next month, a goal which may yet prove a crucial factor in this tie. Now that the dust has settled and the two side's attentions turn once more to domestic duties for the next three weeks, it gives us a chance to take a breather and examine what we learned from the blockbuster encounter.
