Real Madrid 1-1 Man Utd - 5 Things We Learned

5. David de Gea Is A World Class Goalkeeper

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has quite often been maligned for his sometimes shaky and relatively unconvincing performances, and has been chastised for a number of high profile errors like the ones he made against Tottenham and Liverpool recently. I wrote an article recently stating that he should be replaced at Old Trafford, but I am happy to hold my hands up this morning and admit that last night at least, the Spaniard proved me wrong. He made numerous world class saves against Real Madrid to keep his side in the game. Fabio Coentrao had a low shot in the first half seemingly destined to nestle in the bottom corner of the net, but for a fingertip save by de Gea to flick the ball onto the base of the post. He also made an effective, albeit unusual save to keep Coentrao out again in the second half when he appeared to scissor kick the ball off the line. It cannot be denied, this tie might be over by now but for de Gea.
