Southampton: 5 Greatest Youth Graduates

4. Alan Shearer (retired)

A lot of people will remember the great things that Alan Shearer did during his career in the Premier League; people will remember that Shearer is the record Premier League scorer with 260 goals from 434 games. They may also recall that he had a very successful career as an international player by scoring 30 goals from his 63 England games. But not everyone will remember that it all started for the striker as a player with Southampton before the fame followed with Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. What's even more interesting is that Shearer seemed to find his prolific form later in his career since he only managed 23 goals from 118 league games as a Southampton player. Overall, that equates to a goal less than every five games. Nevertheless, Shearer clearly goes down as one of the greatest England strikers that we have ever seen. His brief spell as a manager didn't show a great deal promise and his work as a pundit doesn't show great insight to the game we love. But as a player his quality was always second to none, and even now we judge young English forwards on this great man. It could also be argued that England yet found the next Alan Shearer.
