Southampton News: 5 Reasons Why Sacking Nigel Adkins Is A Mistake

1. Mauricio Pochettino Isn't The Right Man

opo Little is known about Mauricio Pochettino. As a player, he is best remembered as the defender who felled Michael Owen to concede a penalty at the 2002 World Cup, which David Beckham converted in England's 1-0 win. Argentina failed to progress from the Group Stages that year, making it a tournament to forget for Pochettino. As a manager, he has only taken charge of one club - Espanyol. He spent three years with the Spanish outfit between 2009 and 2012, and when he took over the club, they were third from bottom in La Liga and five points from safety. To his credit, he guided them to a 10th place finish that season, but after three mid-table finishes, he was sacked in November 2012 with the club bottom of the league. Considering he has only managed one team and almost got them relegated, Pochettino doesn't seem like the right choice for a team battling relegation. The omens certainly aren't good in that department. It remains to be seen how successful his tenure will be, but Southampton were certainly in safer hands with Nigel Adkins at the helm, that's for sure.
