Southampton Transfers: 10 Targets For January

1. Danny Ings

Of all the rumoured transfer targets on this list, Burnley forward Danny Ings seems like the one that would slot most effortlessly and usefully into the Saints line-up. A local lad from Hampshire, Ings began his career as a schoolboy with Southampton so already has links with the club and the area. At Burnley he emerged in the team alongside current Saints forward Jay Rodriguez, so the two should be able to play off each other again here. At 22 he is still young and still developing as a player, the sort of signing that Southampton like to make. A proven goalscorer with 21 goals in 40 Championship games last season, Ings is beginning to show how good he can be in the Premier League as well. With Southampton's greatest need arguably being another goalscoring forward Ings seems an obvious candidate for a January switch. Having failed in an earlier bid to land Ings in the summer, Saints are reported to be hotting up their attempts to sign the England Under-21 forward this month. A rumoured £7.5 million should be enough to convince Burnley boss Sean Dyche to part with his star striker, with Everton, Aston Villa and Leicester also interested. Ings has insisted that he will stay with Burnley for the season, but an opportunity to return to his boyhood club now that they're chasing European football could be too much to resist.
