Last week Lovren's former defensive partner Jose Fonte ended speculation linking him with Cardiff and signed a new three year deal that also made him team captain. Even with Fonte, Koeman's options at the back are decidedly limited. The Dutch manager is a fan of former Feyenoord defender Vlaar and, with the World Cup semi-finalist only having a year left on his Villa contract, a move to Saints was talked up last month. Villa manager Paul Lambert has attempted to deter Saints' interest, but a further bid would not come as a surprise. Realistically Saints are likely to need both van Dijk and Vlaar to fill the void left at the back by Lovren's departure and not have to fall back on the significantly less capable Jos Hooiveld.
