Southampton's 10 Best Premier League Victories Ever

4. Southampton 6-3 Manchester United - 26.10.1996

Southampton have not often managed to score more than five goals in a single Premier League game. In fact, before their game against Sunderland this month (more on that later), Saints' best goalscoring match was against the major footballing force of the Premier League era. Manchester United were the defending Premier League champions and favourites to win the title again in 1996/97, but had lost to Southampton six months earlier and were coming off the back of a disastrous 5-0 loss to Newcastle. Israeli midfielder Eyal Berkovic, on loan from Maccabi Haifa, was the star of the show in what was probably the game of his career. Giving Southampton the lead after 6 minutes, he would finish the game with two goals and three assists. With United's key midfield anchor Roy Keane dismissed for two bookable offences after just 21 minutes, Saints, still with a 1-0 lead, were able to take control of a thrilling 9 goal game. United, experiencing something of a mini-crisis, would lose again the following week, before pulling things together and running away with the league title once again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6J-4RIRsms Saints would not win again for another two months, and indeed would be on the receiving end of a 7-1 loss at the hands of Everton two weeks later. By the end of the season Graeme Sounness' side only survived by one point, making the win over United crucial to Southampton's enduring Premiership status.
