Spurs: 10 Things Pochettino Must Do To Make His Side A Force Next Season

6. Make The Team Difficult To Beat

Watching Tottenham play last season was quite a traumatic and uneasy experience. Several thrashings home and away to teams from the top four coincided with embarrassing defeats to local rivals Arsenal and West Ham United, losing three times to each, which makes for unpleasant reading for a team who finished in the top six. Pochettino's Southampton meanwhile were great to watch, with their easy on the eye style. The team needs to play like they believe they are part of the league's top teams and Daniel Levy will hope the Argentinian can bring this quality to the side. Being difficult to beat has to start from the back and Spurs' defending was at times atrocious, particularly in the opening few minutes of a game (check out Manchester City's opener at the Etihad for proof) but this should be improved under Pochettino. If he adapts his squad personnel to combine both pace and power and he utilises the strengths of his strongest member of the back four, Hugo Lloris, he should be able to play a high line of defence and press the attack. This will be touched upon shortly, but if Pochettino can make defenders like Jos Hooiveld targets for bigger teams, he can certainly improve the defence at Spurs.
