Spurs: 10 Things Pochettino Must Do To Make His Side A Force Next Season
3. Attack With Flair And Change The Tactics Based On The Opposition
The criticism of AVB was his refusal to change his tactics, sticking with the same formation and style of play regardless of the opposition. It was plodding football, which was slow and relied on ball retention without any cutting threat. Sherwood showed more flexibility but he also made big tactical errors in games, exposing him for the novice that he was. Daniel Levy is leaning towards wanting the same style of football that Roman Abramovich is infamous for wanting at London rivals Chelsea. Pochettino's playing style matches this desire and impressed fans, media and other coaches, who were complimentary of his tactics and playing style and it is this style that Levy will want to see from his beloved Spurs. A high pressing, high tempo style, similar to Pep Guardiola's Tiki-Taka approach at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, is pivotal to the Pochettino style and it is one that fits in to the sweeper keeper approach of Hugo Lloris as discussed earlier. In order to play this way and attack with unpredictability, the team's fitness would have to be improved in order to sustain the fluid movement of players it desires. Pochettino isn't rigid with formation shapes and he rotated his team shape for different opponents. Tottenham certainly have the squad of players to play this way, if coached correctly, and if attacking players like Eriksen, Lamela (if fit and in form) and Paulinho are allowed to play freely, Tottenham will become a pleasure to watch with attractive football and a legitimate threat to the top sides.
