Spurs: 5 Fun Facts About New Boss Tim Sherwood

1. He Was Better Than Zidane

Of course, he wasn't really better than Zidane (far from it), but an infamous footballing story tells us about a hilarious error of judgement on the part of former Blackburn Rovers owner Jack Walker. Around the time that Blackburn Rovers were doing very well in the Premier League (indeed winning the competition in 1994-95), the club's boss at the time €“ Kenny Dalglish €“ wanted to sign a young player from Bordeaux in France. That player was Zinedine Zidane (a transfer which, at the time, was actually a very realistic possibility). However, upon approaching Walker about the idea, Dalglish was rebuffed with the following words that will forever haunt the Ewood Park faithful... "Why do you want to sign Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?" This suggestion that Sherwood offered the club more than Zidane ever could offer them was a horrendous misjudgement, and Zidane would go on to sign for Juventus in 1996 and Real Madrid in 2001, in addition to having a hugely successful international career with France, and the rest is history. Essentially, Blackburn Rovers turned down the option of signing one of the best players of all time because they had Tim Sherwood on their books in one of the most regretful oversights in football history. Don't get me wrong, Tim Sherwood was very successful at Ewood Park €“ captaining them to second and first place in consecutive seasons €“ and a decent Premier League player who earned three senior international caps of his own, but to put him in the same bracket as Zinedine Zidane was extremely generous to say the least. So there you have it €“ five fun facts about new Spurs boss Tim Sherwood. Did you enjoy this little list? What else do you know about Sherwood that might raise a smile?
