Spurs Transfers: 10 Linked Players Tottenham Should Avoid

5. Mehdi Benatia (Roma)

Mehdi Benatia is certainly a decent defender - and at 27 years old he should be approaching the peak years of a centre back - but there are better options out there for Spurs, especially at the quoted price. Roma are said to be demanding £50 million for the Moroccan international and, with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United also said to be interested in the 6 ft 3 1„2 inch stopper, it really isn't worth getting in to a bidding war. Roma have sold a number of high-profile players for big sums of money in recent years - not least in selling Erik Lamela to Spurs themselves for near £30 million - and will not be bullied in to selling anyone at a low price. Consequently, Spurs should look at cheaper options because there are undoubtedly players of equal or better ability to Benatia available for lesser amounts of money. Spurs should now know that paying extortionate amounts of money for players - especially those with no Premier League experience - does not necessarily guarantee that the player will meet the standards required when it comes to performing in the best league in the world.
