Spurs Transfers: 10 Most Wildly Over-Priced Signings Ever

6. Erik Lamela (£30 Million)

Erik Lamela is Spurs' record signing. The young Argentina international joined from Italian side Roma in a £30 million deal in 2013 and was widely tipped to be a direct replacement for Gareth Bale. He had scored 19 goals in 53 Serie A starts for Roma - a fantastic record for an attacking midfielder - and, at 21 years old at the time of his transfer, had already played for his country three times. However, he did not have the immediate impact that Spurs fans were expecting. His first season saw him play nine times in the Premier League (six of those from the bench) without scoring, twice in the League Cup without scoring and six times in the Europa League (once from the bench) scoring only once - against Moldovan minnows FC Sheriff Tiraspol. At this moment in time, £30 million for him seems extortionate - indeed, even if his first season had been a success, £30 million for a 21 year old is a lot of money - but, to be fair to Lamela, he has a lot of potential and may yet come good. His positivity in pre-season this year is palpable and his keenness to interact with fans on social media would suggest that he feels part of the team at Spurs now. Fingers crossed that his fellow Argentine - new Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino - can get the best out of him.
