Sunderland’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle back in April marked their fifth derby victory in a row, and featured one of the best goals ever scored at the Stadium of Light.

The poorest Newcastle side to visit Wearside for many years were out battled, outplayed and undoubtedly outclassed. On the day Sunderland were superior in virtually every department and they made their dominance count right on the stroke of half time.

A freekick was taken by the gigantic goalkeeper, Costel Pantilimon, it was duly nodded down by Steven Fletcher to the left peg of Jermain Defoe. Defoe held his breath, took aim and unleashed a vicious volley into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.

The stands were sent into delirium. Even Thierry Henry commented on how the atmosphere was amongst the best he’s ever experienced.
