Sunderland’s 10 Greatest Premier League Loan Signings
7. Marcos Alonso
Sunderland were in a disastrous situation in January 2014. Rooted to the bottom of the table with Andrea Dossena as the club’s only left back looked like a recipe for disaster. Thankfully, Marcos Alonso came in on loan and helped save the club’s Premier League status.
His first appearance, against Manchester United, saw him defend well and get forward to whip numerous crosses into the box, and it set the tone for things to come.
Alonso was regularly calm in possession, composed in attacking areas and more than held his own from a defensive standpoint. Were it not for his contributions, the side may have been relegated last season. Hence, his flowing locks have been missed in the current campaign of seemingly endless struggle.
