4. Djibril Cissé
It will have escaped the attention of many that, not so long ago, Djibril Cissé was a star striker at Sunderland. Despite breaking his leg twice before joining the Black Cats, Cissé still possessed a magnificent turn of pace, a factor that allowed him to get in behind regularly.
Along with Kenwyne Jones, Cissé scored crucial goals for Sunderland in 2008/9. The pair also produced a glorious dual windmill goal celebration, the like of which, we’ve never seen since.
Cissé’s goals kept the club up ahead of Newcastle and Middlesbrough. Considering he scored in both the home and away Tyne-Wear derby, it’s remarkable the club didn’t build him a statue. Then again, perhaps leopard spot tattoos and a dyed beard aren’t statue material…
