3. Jonny Evans
Evans completed a couple of loan spells on Wearside. He aided the club to reach the top flight and returned the following season to keep the side up.
It was instantly apparent that the young Northern Irishman was destined for bigger things and it’s come as little surprise to see him continue to play at Manchester United all these years later (well, when he returns from a spitting ban that is).
Niall Quinn has since revealed that Sunderland did their utmost to sign Evans up permanently, but Sir Alex rated him too highly to sell.
Who knows where Sunderland would be now if Evans had been their main centre back all these years.
