Sunderland’s 10 Greatest Premier League Loan Signings
5. Danny Welbeck
Welbeck once discussed how he “became a man at Sunderland”, a comment the fans would similarly agree with. The unproven, nineteen year old Welbeck who first arrived at the Academy of Light in August 2010 was markedly different from the England international who left in June 2011.
The former Man Utd player is fondly remembered as part of Sunderland’s greatest attacking line-up since Quinn and Phillips, as he deployed in a front three composed of other quality internationals, Asamoah Gyan and Darren Bent.
His return of 6 goals in red and white was far from exceptional, yet consistent with his struggles since then. For all he’s a good player, he doesn’t score enough goals.
