The Most Expensive England XI Of All Time
1. ST: Andy Carroll - £36.9 Million
One person who will certainly not be leading England to glory is the pony-tailed wonder Andy Carroll, who is still the most expensive striker the Three Lions have ever produced.
Infamously signed by Liverpool from Newcastle on deadline day, January 2011, Carroll had been red hot for the Magpies but couldn't replicate his form on Merseyside. 11 goals in 18 months saw him dubbed as one of the worst signings in the League's history.
Shipped off to West Ham for a significant loss, the target man spent most of his Irons career in the treatment room, occasionally coming on to score from set-pieces and scissor kicks.
Now back up north with his boyhood club, on a pay-as-you-play basis, Carroll has become more of a punchline than a player these days.
Oh well, at least he'll always have THAT goal against Sweden at Euro 2012.
So in conclusion, how well would this team do at a major tournament? Quarter-final loss on penalties feels about right.
