He was arrested on heroin trafficking and sentenced to 13 years in jail. After going 5-4 during his nine fights including wins over Matt Veach and fellow Brit Paul Taylor, he was cut from the promotion. As he was reportedly earning as much as £50,000 a year while working with the UFC. He allegedly started dealing heroin after he was released from the company as it gave him a means to continue living the lifestyle he had become accustomed to.Kelly was labelled the brains of the drug gang which he set up with childhood best friend Christopher St John McGirr.
The pair were caught after police investigating the violent Croxteth Crew saw McGirr with two of their leading members and realised he was selling drugs to the gang.
Police monitored McGirr and Kelly which led them to an associate of the two, who had over £100,000 worth of heroin stashed in his car.
